Hot tub maintenance

Regular maintenance keeps your hot tub in top condition. Maintaining your hot tub encompasses

  1. treating the wood on the exterior (if desired)
  2. keeping the stove clean (if using a wood stove)
  3. keeping the inner shell clean
  4. water maintenance
  5. cover maintenance

1. Treating the wood on the exterior

For all our hot tubs it holds that if the wood isn’t treated, it will gradually age. This has no bearing on its sustainability; it’s purely a matter of personal preference. If you want to keep the original colour of your hot tub's wood, we'd advise you to treat it twice a year. We’ll give you an overview of the products that you can best use for this purpose, depending on the type of wood around your hot tub.

Skargards Hot tubs

Skargards Hot Tubs contain sustainable Thermowood, for which our range includes a transparent and an opaque woodstain. A transparent woodstain is usually applied to a hot tub, preserving the natural look of the wood. Both the transparent and opaque woodstains in our Tikkurila maintenance range provide handy UV protection too.

The Skargards Panel's wooden stove fence should be coated with paraffin oil several times a year to keep it in good condition. Paraffin oil is available at every hardware store.

TICRA Hot tubs

Sustainable Thermowood is used on the exterior of our TICRA Hot Tubs too. We recommend that you use a transparent or opaque woodstain from Tikurilla if you don’t want the wood to age. Both the transparent and opaque woodstains in our Tikkurila maintenance range provide handy UV protection too.

Nordic Hot Tubs

Nordic Hot Tubs feature a Red Cedar exterior, for which we have a special UV protection oil from the Osmo brand

Hikki Hot Tubs

You can treat the oak on your Hikki Bohemen Hot Tub with linseed oil or a transparent woodstain at regular intervals. This will maintain its brownish yellow colour.

2. Keeping the stove clean

If you have a hot tub with a wood stove, you will need to make sure that the ash is removed from the stove regularly.

Once the stove has cooled down, you’ll be able to remove the ashes from the internal wood stove with an ash shovel. If you have an external or integrated* wood stove, then use the ash pan to remove the ash. Regularly removing ash will keep your stove performing at its best and ensure that it heats up more quickly next time. Good air circulation in the stove is essential for efficient use of your hot tub.

* the Skargards Regal has an integrated wood stove.

3. Keeping the inner shell clean

The easiest way to clean your hot tub is to do so straight after you’ve emptied it, if the dirt hasn’t yet dried in. Start by rinsing away most of the dirt with a garden hose. To remove remaining particles, we recommended using a sponge and a non-abrasive cleaning product, similar to what you would use to clean a bathtub in the bathroom. However, never use products containing chlorine or soda, or other abrasive cleaning agents. These types of cleaning agent can damage the stove.

4. Water maintenance

Wood-fired hot tub

If you're not using maintenance products in the water in your wood-fired hot tub, we’d advise changing the water in the tub after every 2-3 sessions. If it’s necessary to do so sooner, then we would of course advise doing so sooner. Rinsing yourself in the shower prior to using your hot tub is advisable. An outdoor shower is ideal for this.

Skargards: Skargards: For Skargards, you can use a Skargards filter system if you like, along with the AquaKristal set including chlorine. This will maintain the water and ensure that it remains clear and clean. Skargards stoves are made of stainless steel 316, which makes them suitable for chlorine. Test strips and AquaKristal PH-1 will help you to maintain the pH value and the chlorine content of the water. If desired, you can also add a UV light (this can only be done in combination with the filter system). A UV light will enable you to use your maintenance products from AquaKristal less. If you’d prefer not to use chlorine in your Skargards Hot Tub, you can use AquaKristal set without chlorine to ensure that your water stays clean. That said, you will have to change the water more often than you would with a filter and chlorine.

A separately added filter system should be dry and protected from the elements. So use a handy storage box to store your filter system in.

TICRA: You can use a filter system for our TICRA Hot Tubs if you like. Test strips and AquaKristal PH-1 will help you to maintain the pH value of the water. If desired, you can also add a UV light (this can only be done in combination with the filter system). .

Hikki: We would advise against using maintenance products in a Hikki Bohemen Hot Tub. Instead, change the water after 2-3 uses. Given the compact size of a Hikki outdoor hot tub, it's not worthwhile using all manner of maintenance products on it, being much cheaper to simply put fresh water in it on a regular basis.

Electric hot tub

Nordic Hot Tub: You should change the water periodically, depending on how much you use your Nordic Hot Tub. We recommend replacing the water at least once a quarter as a minimum. Our Nordic electric hot tubs contain an integrated filter to keep the water clean. The filter contains a cartridge that needs to be replaced once every six months. You should also use the following products for water maintenance in your Nordic Hot Tub:

  • AquaKristal set including chlorine: this will maintain the water and ensure that it remains clear and clean
  • AquaKristal filter cleaner: use this to clean the filter in your Nordic Hot Tub once a week, soaking it in a bucket of hot water and filter cleaner and then rinsing
  • Test strips: for testing whether your hot tub's pH value is at the desired level
  • AquaKristal PH-1: allows you to lower the pH value of the water if need be

5. Cover maintenance

Aerospace maintenance spray applies an extra UV-resistant and dirt-repellent coating to the cover and ensures that it won't dry out. This maintenance spray is suitable for Skargards, Nordic and TICRA covers.
