How do you stoke a wood-fired hot tub?

A wood-fired hot tub is an outdoor tub heated by burning wood in the wood stove. Different types of stove exist: internal and external. The Skargards brand has even developed an integrated stove in their hot tub. This is an internal stove that has been fully incorporated into the tub.

Preparations

Before you start firing up the stove, make sure the hot tub is filled up to about 10 cm below its rim. Turning on the stove when there’s not enough water in the tub will leave you running the risk of the stove getting far too hot because it won’t be able to transfer any of the heat generated to the water. Fill the tub first and you’ll never go wrong!

The burning can get underway

The best way to light up a wood stove is with well-dried birch wood. This burns easily and gives off good heat.  This will get the fire going and your hot tub heated quickly and easily. Once the tub is up to the right temperature, we recommend using oak wood to maintain the temperature. Oak wood is a somewhat harder type of wood that burns for a bit longer, meaning you won't have to refill the stove quite so often.

In the case of an external stove, the water temperature is controlled by sliding the grille in the ash pan less or more open. In principle, it works the same way in the case of the internal and integrated stove. Only you control the oxygen supply by opening or closing the lid of the stove further or, if there is a grille, by moving this further open or closed.

Heating up the water

Heating up a wood-fired hot tub takes an average of 1.5 to 3 hours. This depends on the outdoor temperature, on the temperature of the water at the time at which you fire up the stove, and on the extent to which you use oxygen to get the fire going to heat the tub. Heating up a wood-fired hot tub might seem to take a while, but it's not like you have to stand next to the stove the whole time to keep an eye on the fire. Periodically check the quality of the fire, throw in extra wood and check the water temperature. Having to do a couple of tasks before you can relax in the nice hot water only adds to the charm! Many people find it interesting and fun to operate a wood stove.

The time that it takes for the hot tub to heat up also depends on the size of the hot tub, whether or not you're using a hot tub cover and the type of firewood that you’re using.
