Wood-fired hot tub: tips for optimal use
Want to get the most out of your hot tub and enjoy ultimate relaxation? Then it's important to know how best to use your hot tub, both before, during and after a session. Below we share some handy tips to help you enjoy your hot tub safely and responsibly, making your day-to-day life that bit more relaxed!
Prior to using your hot tub
Your hot tub will need to be filled with water before you can immerse yourself in it.
Fill your hot tub up to 10 cm below the rim
A common mistake is to light the heater before the hot tub is properly filled. Keep the water level about 10 cm below the edge of the hot tub. This will prevent damage to the stove, enabling you to keep enjoying it for a long time to come.

Turn the stove on safely
Use fine, dry wood blocks and wood chips to fire up the stove. Place these in the bottom of the heater and use a firelighter and match or a lighter to light them. For the best heat output, use dry firewood about 30 cm long, finely chopped. To speed up the heating process, put the cover on the hot tub. This holds the heat in nicely.
After about 1.5 to 2 hours the water will have reached the right temperature and you’ll be able to enjoy a relaxing session. Dreaming away in the warm water will help you relieve the stresses of the day!
Whilst using your hot tub
A hot tub offers pure relaxation, but safety is always paramount. Here are a few basic rules to keep in mind for safe, carefree enjoyment of your hot tub:
- Children should always be supervised
When children are playing in the hot tub, it’s important for there to always be an adult present to keep an eye on them. - Choose a comfortable water temperature
The ideal temperature for most people is around 38 degrees Celsius. Check this with a water thermometer to ensure that the water remains comfortable for everyone.

After using your hot tub
Once you have finished relaxing, make sure the stove has cooled down completely before you empty the tub. Here are a few more useful tips for after use:
Clean the stove
Once the stove has cooled down, you’ll be able to remove the ashes from the internal wood stove with an ash shovel. If you have an external wood stove, then use the ash pan to remove the ash. Regularly removing ash will keep your stove performing at its best and ensure that it heats up more quickly next time. Good air circulation in the stove is essential for efficient use of your hot tub.
