The origins of sauna culture
What’s a sauna? Sauna is originally a Finnish word for ‘bathhouse’. It’s a room in which a hot, dry air bath can be taken. From a practical point of view, the sauna was created in the colder Finnish climate as an antidote to the cold.
They would have a room, usually a wooden hut, which they heated with stones that themselves had been heated with fire and gave off heat for a long time. Gradually, they discovered that when water was poured over the stones, the room would then feel even hotter due to the higher humidity. At really high temperatures (between 80 and 100°C) they would begin to sweat, which they found to have a cleansing effect. After all, dirt and waste were flushed out along with the sweat.
This was the beginning of sauna culture in Finland. When other Scandinavian countries discovered the benefits of the sauna too, the tradition quickly spread throughout Scandinavia. Nowadays, people all over the world enjoy the health, well-being and relaxation benefits of using a sauna!
