TICRA Glamping varieties of wood

Our glamping accommodation units are made of sustainable FSC-certified wood.

  1. Our Camping Pods are made of sustainable Nordic pinewood or Thermowood
  2. Our Camping Barrels are made of sustainable Nordic pinewood or red cedar
  3. Our Finnish Kotas are made of sustainable Nordic pinewood

Nordic Pinewood

Pinewood is a common and above all strong type of coniferous wood and is even resistant to sea air. This variety of tree is stronger than fir or spruce, is resilient, weather- and wind-resistant and hardly splits, making it readily processable. These beneficial characteristics have resulted in pinewood being used for many years for a wide array of purposes, including in construction.

Our range includes Camping Pods, Camping Barrels and Finnish Kotas made of Nordic pinewood. This variety of wood grows in sustainably managed forests in the far north of Europe. These trees grow slow due to the cold climate. This slow growth process ensures that the growth rings are closer together, making the wood stronger and extending its lifespan.

  • Dense structure
  • Higher insulation value
  • Longer lifespan

Our Nordic Pinewood Glamping products are made of 46 mm-thick wood, which not only ensures a higher insulation value but also results in a stronger structure and longer lifespan.

Maintenance Nordic pinewood

We recommend treating only the exterior of your pinewood recreational accommodation unit with a high-quality woodstain from the Finnish brand Tikkurila when you start using it.

If the wood is left untreated, apply a base coat, a transparent primer. This will protect the wood from UV light and dirt.

To make the Glamping accommodation unit complete, you’ll need to apply a woodstain, such as: Valtti Colour or Valtti Vinha. Valtti Colour is transparent, keeping the woodgrain visible, whereas Valtti Vinha is an opaque woodstain. By treating the wood with woodstain every year, you’ll be providing it with many years of protection against the elements.

Thermowood

Thermowood is wood that has undergone thermal treatment, thus increasing its durability. Heating the wood to a maximum of 180 to 230°C during the thermal process results in sugars, carbohydrates and resins being removed from the wood. This provides the wood with better protection from damp weather conditions and there is no longer any food available for insects and moulds. The thermal treatment makes the wood very suitable for outdoor use. No chemicals are used in the ecological treatment process; the wood is only heated using steam. Key benefits of Thermowood include:

  • Lifespan significantly extended
  • Less expansion and contraction
  • Increased resistance to moisture
  • Increased durability
  • Improved dimensional stability
  • The wood develops a distinctive, bold, darker (brownish hue) redolent of hardwood varieties

Maintenance Thermowood

If the wood is left untreated, a transparent primer should be applied as a base coat.

To make the Camping Pod complete, you’ll need to apply a woodstain, such as: Valtti Colour or Valtti Vinha. Valtti Colour is a transparent woodstain, keeping the woodgrain visible, whereas Valtti Vinha is an opaque woodstain. By treating the wood with woodstain every year, you’ll be providing it with many years of protection against the elements.

Red Cedar

Red Cedar wood is one of the world's most popular varieties of wood. It has a beautiful, distinctive brown/reddish hue, which gives it a very luxurious look. The wood comes from forests on the western side of Canada. This material has a long lifespan and remains in excellent condition for many years, without the need to treat the wood.

  • a beautiful brownish-red hue
  • very durable and very long lifespan, even if the wood is left untreated (then it will age)
  • to maintain its original colour treat with wood oil, or leave it untreated and allow it to age

Clear Cedar: without knots

Knotty Cedar: with knots

Maintenance Red Cedar

Red Cedar wood will turn silver grey over the years due to exposure to the elements if left untreated. This won’t adversely affect the properties of the wood or the quality of the glamping accommodation unit. To preserve the original wood colour, you can also treat the unit with Osmo wood oil. We recommend treating the exterior 1 to 2 times a year to avoid discolouration.
